Overview
FSSAI State License is a mandatory food license required for medium sized food businesses operating within a particular state in India. It is issued by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India through the respective State Food Safety Department under the provisions of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. Any food business operator whose annual turnover is more than Rs 12 lakhs and up to Rs 20 crores is generally required to obtain a State License.
This license is applicable to manufacturers, traders, transporters, distributors, storage units, restaurants, hotels, caterers, cloud kitchens, food processors, and wholesalers operating within one state. It ensures that the food business follows prescribed hygiene standards, safety norms, labelling requirements, and quality control systems. Operating without a valid State License may lead to penalties, suspension of business operations, or legal action by the food safety authorities.
The FSSAI State License comes with a 14 digit license number which must be displayed at the business premises and printed on food packaging, invoices, and bills. Authorities may conduct inspection of the premises before granting approval to verify sanitation, food safety practices, and infrastructure. Compliance with food safety management systems is essential to maintain validity of the license and avoid cancellation.
